According to ESPN’s Andy Katz the Kansas State Wildcats will extend head coach Frank Martin’s contract through the 2014-15 season. Just an hour ago Andy Katz tweeted, “Kansas State expected to announce an extension for Frank Martin. Martin should be in the hunt for national coach of the year.” The deal is reportedly worth $1.2 million a year.
This season Martin guided the Wildcats to the second most wins in the regular season, one shy of the school record. Not to mention, the highest ranking in school history in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls at No. 5. This year he also became the first coach to begin his career with three consecutive 20 win seasons.
The Wildcats ended the season (24-6) overall and (11-5) in conference play. The Wildcats are in the talk for a possible 2 or 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, which would be their highest seed since they were a 4 in 1987-88.
Kansas State finished second place in the Big 12 regular season, and will likely finish ranked in the top 10 in the nation.
Martin was originally thought to be hired just to keep star recruits Michael Beasley and Bill Walker. But he has turned the Kansas State basketball program around and has sustained the success built upon players like Beasley and Walker. With Martin, K-State has re-established the program’s proud tradition from decades before. This season K-State beat 3 of the 5 ranked teams they played and was very much in the talks for a possible 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Kansas State has announced a press conference to discuss the basketball program for today at 1:30 PM. Expect them to talk about Martin’s contract extension, who was also tabbed Big 12 Coach of the Year this morning.
