Kansas State was coming off the biggest win of the season thus far against No. 24 Virginia Tech. The Wildcats easily manhandled the Hokies and forced their superstar Malcolm Delaney into 10 turnovers. After that, many thought of the upcoming game against the Presbyterian Blue Hose would be a tune-up for the CBE Classic game. However, that is exactly why they play the game.
The Wildcats took what seemed to be a commanding 44-30 halftime lead, and did not seem to make many mistakes on offense.
However, opening up the second half Presbyterian launched numerous three’s that found the basket, as well as their frontcourt crashing the boards, and scoring in the paint. With few answers from the Wildcats, Presbyterian inched closer to the lead as the game progressed.
However, in the final seconds, K-State sophomore Rodney McGruder received a pass from Jacob Pullen, and nailed a three to clinch the victory for the Wildcats. Much credit is given to Presbyterian for out-scoring the Wildcats in the second half 37-32. Not to mention, shooting 50 percent from the field and having four players in double-figures.
Al’Lonzo Coleman was too much for the Wildcats inside coming away with a total of 15 points, and 14 rebounds.
Nonetheless, the Wildcats survive the upset-bid and moved on to (3-0) on the season. Five players were in double-figures for the Wildcats, highlighted by Pullen’s 15 points, four assist, three steals and rebounds apiece. Rodney McGruder had 13-points, three rebounds and assist. With Wally Judge, Jamar Samuels and Martavious Irving all scoring ten apiece.
Overall, not a sloppy game for the ‘Cats but the three’s would not fall. The Wildcats shot (7-24) from behind the arc, which is the lowest shooting percentage from three-point land all season. There were numerous situations were the ‘Cats relied on the three ball to fall, but it just didn’t.
Next up, the Wildcats travel to Kansas City to take on No. 12 Gonzaga in O’Reily’s CBE Classic.
