On a night where Tex Winter celebrated his homecoming, and induction to the college basketball Hall of Fame, the Kansas State Wildcats (2-0) defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies, 73-57. Jacob Pullen faced early foul trouble and resulted in 17 first-half points by VT’s Malcolm Delaney.
Nonetheless, after going into halftime with just a one-point lead, the Wildcats ultimately found the range from beyond the arc and pulled away from the No. 24 Hokies. Delaney was harassed in the second half, only coming up with five points.
Delaney led all scorers with 22 points, while scoring was much more balanced for the Wildcats. Pullen, Rodney McGruder, and Jamar Samuels all scored 13 apiece. The Wildcats’ success in the second half stemmed from the six three-point baskets they nailed after taking a commanding lead on the Hokies. Jordan Henriquez-Roberts played one of his best games as a Wildcat, scoring 10 points and grabbing eight boards off the bench.
More impressively, the Wildcats out-rebounded the Hokies 42-33 after being tied 19-19 at the break.
There were four players in double-figures for the Wildcats, two coming off the bench. Despite Curtis Kelly sitting out at head coach Frank Martin‘s discretion, the Wildcats front-court managed to produce a great game, accumulating 28 points while snagging 25 rebounds.
The Wildcats remain undefeated and looking very strong heading towards the O’Reilly CBE Classic next Monday. Before their key matchup against Gonzaga, however, they must gear up to face Presbyterian on Thursday at 7pm CST.
