Kansas State seemed to be one of the busiest teams in the Big 12 over the weekend. The Wildcats football team hosted a dangerous Central Florida squad that was looking to knock K-State from the unbeaten ranks. The Wildcats did prevail thanks to a touchdown run by Carson Coffman in the last 30 seconds of the game.
On hand at Bill Snyder Family Stadium were 50,586 fans to witness the game against the UCF Knights. Of the fans that attended the game were two highly-touted basketball recruits.
Thomas Gipson, a 6-foot-7 forward from Cedar Hill, Texas and Perry Ellis, a 6-foot-8 forward from Wichita, Kansas both decided to pay head men’s basketball coach Frank Martin and the Wildcats a visit.
The pair of recruits were able to watch the Wildcats practice, meet with coach Martin and talk to some of the current basketball players.
“We had a great visit with Coach Martin and (Brad) Underwood” Ellis’ mother Fonda said, although a thunderstorm forced them to relocate to Bramlage Coliseum early in the football game.
Because of the weather, the Ellis family went to coach Martin’s office to finish watching the game. While there, Ellis also got the chance to chat with Kansas State stars Jacob Pullen and Curtis Kelly. Despite the storm, the Ellis family had a great time.
While on the other hand, there isn’t any changing Gipson’s mind about committing to Kansas State.
“Thomas had a great time and confirmed making the right decision,” Gipson’s mother said. “We’re buying a lot of purple already,” she said while thanking all of Manhattan and Kansas State for the wonderful time.
Each of these recruits will and could have a major impact the Kansas State basketball program. Gipson should step in and fill Kelly’s shoes once he leaves.
Ellis, who hasn’t committed, is a favorable choice for the Wildcats in the 2012 recruiting class. If coach Martin can lure Ellis to K-State, he’ll be able to elevate the program to even higher standards.
