I personally think they are going to do real well this year. I think Brodrick Smith is gonna help the team greatly but I believe Chris Harper is the most dangerous threat we are going to have at receiver this year.

10 things about yesterday's game.

-Badke, if you want to blog this, this is fine with me.

10. College football is back, and most importantly, Kansas State football is back. It's been a long, long off-season with all the Big XII/Big 10/Pac 10 drama, and some teams moving to a different conference. And it was great to see K-State fans out in full force at the Bill. I know that they made the announcement that the game was sold out, but I did have my doubts that it would actually be "sold" out, so to speak. Typically, the far northeast side, especially at the upper deck, are empty at times. Not that day. I want to tip my hat off to the crowd of 51,059 that showed, the biggest for a home opener in Wildcats' history.

9. Traffic, as usual, was slow and stand-still, but that's to be expected when you get to Manhattan on game-days. What was funny was when driving down on K-177 to Manhattan, and hitting the slow traffic, there was one vehicle, that some gal got out of the passenger side of the car, and started walking. Where exactly she go, I have no idea, but I made a comment that, "The way traffic is going, she's probably thinking that it'll be faster to get there by walking." Never before have I seen anybody get out of the car and walk away on K-177.

8. The weather was perfect, although it was very warm with little to no breeze to keep us cool. A lot of people stayed inside the concrete, where they can keep cool under the shades in the stadium before kickoff and during halftime. Was bummed to see that there was no fly-over during the end of the National Anthem, considering the game was being broadcasted nationally. Harley Day was awesome though. To get a feel of the motorcycles revving up the stadium, was just pure awesomeness. It would have been more awesome if they stayed there during the game, and rev it up while the defense was on the field.

7. Great game, mixed in with some sloppiness. Granted, UCLA is a very legit opponent to play against, and I'm happy that we won the game against them, even if the score was close. Unlike the team to the east, who somehow lost to North Dakota State University. Talked to several KU fans, and one said "The way things went last night, If Northwest Missouri State played them, NWMSU would have won the game." Ouch. Hopefully somebody told Turner Gill that History was "Made" that day.

6. We all knew that Daniel Thomas was going to be the guy on the offense as well as having 4 out of 5 starting offensive linemen back and having Braden Wilson, and it showed. Thomas ran for a career-high 238 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but the game clincher TD that Thomas ran, Wilson absolutely annihilated Ayers on that. I just hope that the coaching staff realize that while Thomas is very good, they can't really "overuse" him, because K-State will need him later in the season, especially when the weather is going to get colder. Powell was a nice surprise and that eases my concern on the RB depth. One thing is certain, Kansas State can definitely run.

5. Carson Coffman is at times, looking like a guy that is a manageable QB and making smart decisions and throws. His passes were, for the most part, acceptable. But most of the time, he looks like a freshman making dumb decisions and holding on to the ball too long. You cannot have your 5th year senior holding on to the ball, taking unnecessary sacks, and lack of pocket awareness when it was needed. It's when he tries to run around, trying too hard to make something happen when the pocket collapse or the receivers aren't open, is when he gets into too much trouble. And 66 yards of passing as a team? Ouch. K-State needs to do better than that, or Thomas is going to get worn out.

4. Knuckleheads getting thrown out in the game for having alcohol in the stadium. There were some knuckleheads about 4 rows down from where I sat, and I can clearly see a small plastic bottle of Captain Morgan on one knucklehead's back pocket. I never understand why some people tend to do this type of behavior. It's silly, unnecessary, and downright plain dumb just to bring in a small plastic bottle of alcohol. I don't know what happened to some of them, but needless to say, Johnny Law Department swarmed that area and questioned some people that were associated with the knuckleheads and eventually, tossed them out.

3. Did Josh Cherry go missing? When I saw Anthony Cantele kicking off, I figured it was just for kicking off duties, but when K-State scored their first TD of the season, it was Cantele kicking the XP, not Cherry. And it was Cantele drilled a 35 yard FG, not Cherry. Doerr had a solid day punting. I have no doubts that Tramaine Thompson will take one to the house at some point in the season. In all, special teams was solid all around.

2. I'm not sure what to make out of this defense. On some possessions, they looked solid, and other possessions, they looked confused and lost, and was getting annihilated at the point of attack. UCLA ran for 193 yards on the ground for 37 carries, 5.2 yards a pop. That's not going to cut it. Defensive line looked gassed at the end of the 3rd quarter to the 4th quarter. But I do give K-State defense credit for when UCLA was in scoring position, they tightened up when it was needed, forcing them to settle for field goals. Team speed on defense looks faster than last year, which is a good sign.

1. Management of the game is absolutely in mid-season form. It absolutely drives me crazy that calling two timeouts in the first quarter. They need to do away with that, because those timeouts would have came in handy when Garrett intercepted Prince's pass at the UCLA 47, giving the offense a chance to get in FG range with 27 seconds. The management on offense in the 2nd quarter was unacceptable. 19 total yards in the 2nd quarter. That's not going to win you many ball games. In all, it was great to win at a sold out home, on national TV.
